8 Tips for Hosting with Ease
Whether it's Thanksgiving, a birthday or a simple Saturday dinner, I love hosting, but I've learned (sometimes the hard way!) that the secret to a great evening is being able to actually enjoy it with your guests. Here are my 8 tips for hosting with ease.
1. Plan ahead.
Know who is coming and whether they have preferences, allergies, intolerances or dietary restrictions. It adds a personal touch and makes your guests feel special. Don't wait for them to tell you: some will feel shy or won't want to burden you, so ask them personally beforehand ☺️
2. Offer different drink options.
Wine, beer, seasonal cocktails: everyone has a favourite drink, but we all like having choices! Buying a few more options doesn't add to your prep time and gives your guests the luxury of choice. Some seasonal cocktails can be made in advance, so you just need to add ice and garnishes and voilà! Always make sure you have enough ice. For white wine, I like to keep a chiller out so I'm not running to the fridge every time a glass needs filling.
3. Plan your menu intelligently.
If everything has to be prepared and cooked on the spot, you won't enjoy your evening or be able to connect with your guests. I follow a 70-30 rule at minimum: 70% of the cooking done before, 30% during the evening. If you can do 80-20, even better!
4. Have your appetizers ready.
Have all your appetizers done BEFORE your guests arrive. You don't want to be running between the kitchen and the front door; you want to greet everyone properly, because it sets the tone for the evening. If guests arrive at a set time, have hot appetizers already in the oven, or cold ones already plated so you can bring them out with ease.

5. Set a nice table.
Cute napkins, an elegant centrepiece and distinctive service plates really elevate your table, and you don't need to splurge! I buy most of my silverware at thrift stores or on sale, or inherit pieces from family who don't want them anymore. Colour and texture can bring your theme and ambiance to life, but you can never go wrong with white!
6. Start with a clean house.
Not the most glamorous part, but a necessity out of respect for your guests. A clean space makes a great first impression, and guests are more likely to relax and feel at ease and cared for.
7. Stay on top of things.
Keep an eye on your guests: offer second servings to the whole table (not just one guest), refill glasses, bring extra napkins when needed. I'm not saying this to add to your workload, but seeing what's needed before anyone asks is always a winner. The goal is to make everyone feel well cared for!
8. Make extra for your guests to take home.
I don't see this tip often, but making more of the main dish or dessert so guests can bring some home is a lovely way to end the evening, and they'll think of you while eating it 😊 Think of it as party favours!
And most importantly: smile and have fun. Your guests came for you, not for a perfect evening.
